A Message from your Unifor National President

Unifor sends condolences and solidarity to the family and friends of Somali-Canadian activist Almaas Elman who was killed on November 20 in Mogadishu. Almaas came from an activist family, as the sister of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Ilwad Elman and daughter of the late peace activist Elman Ali Ahmed, and Fartuun Adan, the founder of the Elman Peace Center.

Human rights defenders are being attacked and murdered at record rates. Many are targeted as a result of their quest for peace and a world where all human beings are guaranteed the basic rights of dignity and respect.

Unifor is an organization that believes in and demands human rights for all. The loss of Almaas Elman to violence reminds us of the urgent importance of continuing this work.

The world has lost another tireless activist for social justice, human rights and women’s rights. Elman’s courage, determination and persistence will continue to be an inspiration for people around the world as we carry on her work to empower marginalized brackets of society, cultivate leadership and support self-determination.

In solidarity,

Jerry Dias National President
